| | Re: Don't have a clue??? You would think so. But not once in all my years have I received an actual design from an Architect or designer. Sometimes the have a photo or they scribble in a thought,,,but many ,if not most times there is a cloud circled on the drawings and a note " to the discretion of the carver". Of course I have to submit a drawing for their approval,,but that's the way it seems to go.
Even in this case,,they sent a photo of something along the lines of what they would like to see. Not necessarily this exact piece,,just something in this flavor.
O.K.,,,I think of something

| | Re: Don't have a clue??? Mark, they know that the carver will usually do a better job designing the carving then they would! It looks very impressive, keeping fingers crossed for you, another challenge - but what is a challenge for you? I am sure you have a few ideas in your head by now.... Fred |

| | Re: Don't have a clue??? Thank you Fred,,I appreciate the confidence you have in me.
I've always had dreams of doing bigger jobs,,and fantasies of what they/it would be like....then this just gets dropped my lap and it makes you stop for a second and wonder,,,"what the @*%$# am I doing ?" When something out of the norm hits you,,and challenges you,,it can be a little unsettling. It can be out of your comfort level.
But since this is the direction I want to go,,need to go,,then this is what I'll have to deal with and figure it out as I go along. That step into a different realm,,of size,,market,,and expectations of the clients and what they are looking for,,well,,it certainly can be a thrill. Maybe I'll get it,,maybe I won't,,I'll learn something from it. It just makes me realize there is a totally different market out there and I'm starting to scratch the surface of a entirely different world of possibilities. This isn't the carving I started out anticipating years ago,,yet here it is. And once again it changed my view of carving and the realities of what it can be and where it can go.

I know what you mean, I know the feeling when something comes up and you just stand there, the mind going - not even close to what is involved, at least this is my case, you cannot stay in your comfort level, you would not accomplish much. Yes, there are possibilities out there and I hope this one is going your way. Fred |

| | Re: Don't have a clue??? Way to go. I hope you get the job. I would say it is going to take you 4 times longer than you think it will. Do not be shy on this bid. You will loose your shirt or give a way your time if you are not sure. What is the time frame they are looking for. This is one huge job.
I will tell you as an architect myself that most architects today are not very good artist or designers. Don't get me wrong there are some fantastic artist in the architectural world. Most do not have the skill to design something like that. I do wonderful water colors and renderings but it would be a stretch for me to design something like what is in the picture. A good carver is much better at drawing up a design like that. If it were my job I would give you the style and general design then let you come up with it for final approval.
I would come and sharpen you tools free just to see you carve. LOL I can shave with my chisels.
I have restore several yacht clubs and many a victorian home but I would be at a loss as how to bid on a job like this myself and I have been doing it for 40 years.
