You can edit the size of the original avatar by using a photo editor. The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller). Then go to the User CP, Edit Avatar and load the original from your computer. You might want to save the original and edit a new one just in case.
