I have learned how to texture for feathers (finally getting the idea) on this dodo. Not the quaility that you bird carvers do, but hey, its a definate improvement over my first and last attempt at feathers. This is a caricature so the feathers are large and hopefully will look fluffy. Any advice for improvement, besides practice, appreciated. I'm whamped, nite

Nancy, I carve birds; but, have never done a bird caricature. One thing immediately came to mind as I looked at your carving. Rather than go "soft" with the feathers, which will lead to a more natural look, I think I would try undercutting the feathers and gouge down behind the edge to make them turn up on the ends. Then take a knife and really tear up the ends of the feathers. This would make them look more like what we sotherners refer to as a "frizzley" chicken. Then take a "V" tool or a white cylinder stone (if you use power) and really emphazise the barbs.

I get exactly what you are suggesting there. Tomorrow when I'm notr so tired I am going to just look at it and try to "see" frizzled feathers on him. I think you are right, will lean more toward caricature that way. thanks! Have a great evening.
