| | Re: distraction projects well i have had the habit of having many projects on the go plus a box of cut -outs of futur projects.
i am trying to limit the number of carving projects that i work on at any time and use woodworking for distraction .

| | Re: distraction projects Here are my carvings at various stages and also the lapboard in the works. I removed the top from my stand and attached it to the lapboard. This way I can carve anywhere I want.

I have right now waiting for time , 75 different carvings that will be started as soon as the second stonewall is complete, and the copyright work is finished , which will be turned into mold production items, then there is Goodys Santa's the 2 staffs I have to finish and then the Robert E Lee and then another tree carving ....
Damn good thing I do carve in my sleep ....

| | Re: distraction projects I guess I'm the statistical outlier...I usually only have 2 or 3 at the most in work at the same time, and they're usally about the same stage as well. That way, when I begin painting, I can switch from one to another as the paint dries. My carving area is sufficiently small that I can't paint and carve stuff at the same time, as the dust and chips would get all over the drying paint. When I use polyurathane varnish, I can usually take those into another room to dry, but the standard acrylics and water-based varnish only take a few minutes to dry, so I usually go read the WCI forums during that time...

| | Re: distraction projects Good subject material on the carvings, something different.........no doubt when you graduate to the pipes you'll go to the hills. When my nephew practiced piping in the yard he drove the neighbors beserk....so he went to the local park now they're all happy.
Like everyone else.....four projects are under the knife....painting....burning, all are different subjects.

| | Re: distraction projects Until I retired (1995) I seldom had more than a couple of projects going at once and most of the time only one nearing completion. Then I had time for woodcarving classes. Three or so a year.
I have always refused to be in a rush with my carving. I have never finished a carving during the time alloted for the course and probably never will. I try to get the unusual and difficult parts complete, then finish at my leisure in my shop at home. But, the project I started in class, plus the extra roughouts purchased started to mount up and I fell behind.
At first I worried, then realized that (for me) this is a good thing. It allows me time to look at the piece I am working on and make subtle to major changes. I have come to realize that there is usually enough wood to allow individuality.
Also, since most of my carving is "in the round", working on one piece for a few days to a week and then switching to another seems to keep my proportions a little more in line.
Working too long on a single carving leads me to a sense of urgency for completion. I rush the carving, rush the painting, and am generally less satisfied when I finally say, "That's it. No more. What's next?"
Wow, I just took a quick look at the carvings underway! Maybe I better carve a little faster. Maybe my wife is right.."you sure you need that extra roughout/blank/wood?" But then, it lends credibility to the need for more tools....... |

| | Re: distraction projects I usually have 3 or 4 things going on at once, ships in various stages and a carving or two. With so many requests lately, I have a few more projects on the table, which is difficult for me, as too much causes confusion, so I have to clear the decks before I accept anything else. Still having fun though, and getting more accomplished than I thought I would.

| | Re: distraction projects Thor, your carvings are so clever!
I agree with most. I have a couple little projects going on at once. One is roughed out, one needs to be carved, one needs to be painted, one is waiting to cure, then the ideas start going on and it seems like all I wanna do is draw new patterns. One good thing - I'm rarely bored! |

| | Re: distraction projects I would like to say I have a couple but,,,,,, I way to many carving projects in the mill. When I first retired in 03, I carved and carved, then as the years go by in retirement, I find outside project getting in the way of my carving time.
The garge addition isn't completed yet but totally inclosed, The house needs the painting and scarpping finished. Ground work for new car paort, to move one vehicle out of the garge to finish the garage up. Kitchen remodeling to start, more insulating in the attic, investigate siding after painting. Why? The little bride wants siding.Ho Hum. What is a man to do. Grab the fishing poles and knife and go fishing and carving. Yep, that be it, see y'll later. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
