Default A different take on ravens & feathers

Not an accurate feather of any sort, but that's one of the things I like about northwest coast carving styles. Yellow cedar, about 7" tall, 3" wide, diluted red mahogany stain.

Critque and comments welcome, as always.

Very nice feather. Very nicely done. I like it. Are you going to hang it from something or what? From photo, it doesn't look like it is flat to like hang on the wall. Just curious.

Very cool feather my friend!!! Love the style. The Raven within the feather is a great concept. Marvelous work.

Deliberately made it flat so as to hang flat against a wall. First one I made (which flew out of the house about 0.5 seconds after I finished it) was carved on both sides.

WC, did you carve the design in to the feather and them use darker stain or burn the design in?
really doen't matter as it looks fantastic.
I use to do fret work and used different woods to off set the designs. I would use oak annd walnut together on a feather and then take the different shaped woods and change them around. One was a feather with wolf and moon, I would use the walnut feather and oak moon and wolf anf vice versa. neat effect.
Anyway, I realy like your raven feather.

I wish someone would teach that kind of carving in our area as I really enjoy west coast style of carving. I'd be curious to see parts of the raven blackened or shaded to see how the contrast in the wood, however, its fine the way it is.

Lovely , I really like the piece and the style of sculpture. The way the forms interlock and are stylized is wonderful. I have three great West Coast carvings on the wall in my studio that I found in a shop nearby where people donate stuff to be sold for charity, couldn't believe my luck.Everyone but me probably knows, but what kind of tools are/were traditionally used to do West Coast style? And are those what you use?
