| | Where did I go wrong? This is supposed to be a lioness looking into the distance. I think I could add horns and call it a dragon.....but I can't call it a lioness. What did I do wrong? I know I could sculpt it in the round....but this high relief has me stumped. I can't get the perspective right. I have looked at scads of pictures and I have Desiree's book on Big Cats. But so far nothing has helped. |

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? Hello joy, in my opinion the top of the head is not wide enough. Makes it look like a sheep to me. But that's is just my opinion, I probably cound'nt do as good as you did.

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? I'll sort of go along with Gary.....the face looks too long. Perhaps shortening the snout would work. Kinda hard to make the face wider at this stage, but shortening it may work. And maybe the snout could be pushed a bit to the left as seen from the front.

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? Hey Joy, I think those fellas are right. Shorten the face. I'll bet you'll like it then, cause the rest is fine. Personally, I'm kinda afraid to try a carving like that. Keep it up. Tom H |

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? It's the ears. Lion ears are only like that when they in a threatening position. Your lion is not. They should be up and alert. Gary is right, my first thought was a sheep. Nice job on the head. |

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? Yes, Gary, I agree about the sheep look...maybe I should just stick with the sheep LOL. Are you talking about the top of the head...between the ears? This is a clay mock up....but I am trying to limit the depth to 3 inches. But there ought to be a way to "imply" that extra width.
Al and Tom, since this is clay I can still do anything I want that isn't deeper than 3 inches. So if I widen the head maybe the snout won't be too long. But I will keep that in mind.
Lynn, I've been calling this sucker, Dolly, all afternoon. I even threatened to feed it to a real lion.
About the ears, I didn't want her to look like she was snoozing in the sun.....I wanted an alert look. You think the ears are too agressive for the pose? |

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? Baaa! Baaaa! Joy... Don't be too hard on yourself! I'm sure that even Michael Angelo didn't have successes! Just continue as you are and rename it the "Sheepish Lion!" Ha! Ha!

| | Re: Where did I go wrong? O.K. Eddy and Vic....as soon as I quit laughing I am going to google sheep pictures. Maybe if I try to carve a sheep it will turn out to be a lion! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
