Default "Deets" - A First Look

I spent the morning finishing up the final details on Distant Drummer and while waiting for the base to dry thought I would go ahead and start my next project.

To me, Lonesome Dove is probably the best book I ever read and without a doubt the best American TV show ever made. The characters in that series are just so real I can never tire looking at them. I thought a good project would be to do the main characters...Gus, Call, Deets, Pea Eye, Newt and maybe even Laurie. Can't you just see them all standing on your display table? Maybe in front of the "We don't sell pigs!" sign. Wow! What a thought!

I would start with Deets as I think he would be the most difficult to do and after he's finished I'd know if the interest was still there to do some of the others. So, I knocked out his head this afternoon and so far he's looking pretty good. I made the bill of his Kipi out of a seperate piece of Tupelo as it's easy to bend when wet and strong once dry. Now the next step is to force myself to watch Lonesome Dove for the 21st time to make sure I get all of Deets details. Those pants made out of an old quilt are going to really be fun. Most importantly, I want to make sure that I show the proper respect to the character while potraying him as a caricature. I've always thought this was extremely important and during the Dayton show this past November this view as reinforced in a conversation I had with a visiting Black Cowboy who opined about how Blacks were portrayed by some carvers. While his comments were not aimed at me I was still embarrased as I too had seen the carvings he spoke of. Never do I want one of my pieces to offend anyone.

Anway, your comment and opinions about Deets are appreciated.

Lynn, your Deets is fantastic. Let me tell you, If I could carve a head half as good as you've carved that one, I'd be one happy camper. He's truly fantastic, thanks for showing him.

well as we all know "deets has never been one to give up on a garment just cause it got a little age on it!! " hey thats great lynn and what a super idea.i have to agree with you it is the very best as for as i'm concerned, and for me the original is it!! once you started losing the original cast it wasn't the same.i remember being so mad the first time i saw it and gus was killed off.
keep us posted this will be a great poject to watch and i know you'll pull it off wonderfully.for some reason lynn the scene with gus sitting by the fire cooking biscuits and reading the "good book" seems like something i would see you doing soo well.

I've been watching Lonesome Dove trying to pick out details for the Deets figure. From what I can pick out he doesn't wear spurs, has a leather thong punched through his kipi that ties under his neck, wears his pistol backward in a military holster and his chaps have been cut to only come as high as his leg joint behind the knee. I had thought of doing him without the chaps but those pants would just be too distracting so will only show them from behind. The chaps always add more interest.

If you know of any other small things I missed please let me know as I'm starting the body today.
