Ron, first let me apologize for not being a little descriptive of this carving. This spirit stands about 10 inches high which is a little short for a cypress knee. Except for the face and beard, the knee was left natural. The fellow ended up with one of those thoughtful poses which gives you the impression he is pondering something. Neither smile nor frown. I only used a little oils (some very thinned vermilion and burnt sienna) sparingly to highlight the face and some for the eyes and then sprayed it with some satin Deft.
The cypress knees can be a little tricky to carve as it is very soft. Your tools must be very sharp. Power carving helps in areas where you must cut across the grain.
I purchased my knees from Greg (descriptive) here on this site. He can be reached at
georgiacarver@georgiacarver.com. Fair price and very responsive to my questions. with quick shipping.
Carole Jean Boyd's book ,Carving Cypress Knees, is an excellent resource it you are thinking of getting into carving these and is available through Fox Chapel. This was a lot of fun and I have several more I am working on.
Thanks to the rest of you for your kind remarks. I'll post some of my other knee projects here in the near future.
