Well, here is my "quick and dirty" acrylic paint job. WHen its dry I will rub on some linseed oil to give it a shine.

I think it looks nice - has that "old St. Nick" look to it... my wife is currently sleeping getting ready for her night shift, but I think she'll like it when she sees it.

I have a second knee of the same size, I think I will do one for my mom as well.

Thanks for looking!

AJC

Andrew,

Good Job! I would be interested in knowing where your cypress pieces came from. I'll just about bet they aren't from deep south swamps and that would account for the difference in texture. I'll have to give second considerations to buying some if that is the case.

He looks cool Andrew i bet your mom will be well pleased if you do one for her too. I've never heard of or seen a piece of wood like that before, what does it carve like?

Well, there isnt a grain to speak of, and mine was quite hard - id comare it to a dense, dry basswood.

But, it seems that it is not the norm... Im interested in cutting the second one to see how it is.

Very nicely done.

I've had some cypress knees around here for a long time but haven't tried carving them yet. Lately with work and other things going on, I have not had time to carve much of anything.

Nice looking piece! Cypress Knees can be a challenge, as the wood inside the "skin" usually is pretty soft and crumbles easily. I end up stropping after nearly every cut. Can't wait to see it painted. Nice job!

OOPS! didn't scroll down. I like the paint job as well!

Hi Andrew,

You rose to the challenge and certainly conquered it. Very nicely done and your first to boot.

I did the 2nd santa yesterday.. the knee was very different shape, flatter and I couldnt get as much relief in his face. But it turned out OK as well.

It carved better than the first one! Very smooth.
