| | Re: Crow cane Nice cane Bob look fine to me my son. What is happening to you? It seems you are getting away from the ships these days and into the canes. Do you have any ships in progress or not. If you do we would be interested in seeing your latest project.

| | Re: Crow cane Finally getting back to finish some Colin. Just put Marco Polo back on the desk and installed channels along the hull, double channels actually as per the time period. Working on blocks and deadeyes, but those are slow going, so small and so many of them. Not much to show you I'm afraid, but if you like I'll begin another thread on her completion, rigging, etc.
Still have Shannon to finish and a commission to begin. A local ship, built in 1839, for some nice folks in Utah, related to the original owners. I'm looking forward to getting that done.
Canes, dragons and other commissions have taken a lot of time lately, so it's good to have them done and I'm able to get back to my first love.......ships.

| | Re: Crow cane Bob, I have just looked at your sticks and they are great. I do have a question. Some of them appear to have a long neck on the heads. How have you overcome the crossgrain problem? I am currently carving some handles out of Yew wood and it has a swirling grain pattern, so you have to be careful where you cut it out of the blank.

| | Re: Crow cane Very nice cane Bob, did you carve the handle separate from the shaft. Asking because I'm going to do one for my father in law.

| | Re: Crow cane The heads and handle are one piece, with the grain running from front to back/back to front, while the shafts run top to bottom/bottom to top. No weak areas. Some of the more elaborate handles, like a dragon, will be made up of laminated pieces, side to side and reverse grain, for strength. No failures so far and I use them myself, so I know how important the strength and comfort is.
