Default couple - wip

i like to share what i am working on at the moment... i let the title this time a little less descriptive, since i want rather that the carving tells you what it is about... it will be helpful to me when you tell me what you see, or what kind of thoughts you have when looking at it,,, this way i learn if i made the right choices in how to depict my idea ,,, for now, of course, you cannot say much, since hardly anything to see ...

it is linden, and pretty big, the block measured about 32x24x6.5 cm, the faces will be about 2/3 lifesize...it is meant to be hanged on wall when finished ...

i made a claymodel, which guided me in putting the relationship of the two persons, and to do so, i used their noses and forehead as references... thats how far i am...

happy new year, and happy carving to all !

You have taken on another tough one I see Doris. Keeping the proportions the same with two separate faces together would be my challenge. It appears that you may put a hat on the male but that could be from the photo as I see a bit of a peak for a hat. This will be interesting to follow along.

I put "my girl" into a corner I took on more than I can handle.:-(((( I wish I had not started it since I have trouble working on those details., it is just not my style sofar I have been doing abstracts and stylized carvings.
maybe later .

hi patrick, alice and tony, so glad you enjoy looking :-) actually i dont think of this carving as complicated, maybe the area between the two will be a little difficult to carve, since it is tight area, but otherwise, its just two heads, ,,,but then, i never thought a carving is complicated, and later learned i misjudged...lol .... alice, that is sad, but to me it sounds more like you not dare to try to carve it... wish i could carve them curls for you, its a pity if the carving will not be finished just because the curls...yes, i know you carved more abstract way, but see, curls are just simple shapes with grooves carved in,,,maybe it would help you to try a single lock on a tryout piece of wood, just to see how it carves and that you can gain confidence to do the real ones on her ?

Doris, it's hard to visualize where this piece is going as it is so new to us, I'll be watching as you move along with great interest. Thanks for showing your beginning, it's a thrill to see a step by step as you go along.

As you say, Doris, there is not much detail to comment on at this point. But, as I studied the photo, I became fascinated by your pencil markings and what they might mean. Since I use a lot of pencil "notes" (from lines to words such as roll, slant, deep, and even ? where I am not sure what I want to do) on my carvings, how other carvers mark up their pieces is something I find extremely interesting. Trying to guess your pencil marks is like having a puzzle within a carving.

hello cliff and paul :-) ...yes, you are right, in the moment there is not much to comment on, my request was meant more towards the end, when you can see what it is, so then i can read what you see in the piece, and thus learn if i did good or not... whatever you will see in the piece, all is right. if it not coincides with what i want show, it is my fault and i have to try harder to make it read correctly... so, please enjoy the stages, and if you let me know what you see towards the end of carving, i would appreciate a lot...

paul, the pencilmarks, i use them a lot in the early stages, when the block of wood "cannot speak" to me. ... in this case, i think you guessed the browlines, hairlines and eyelines... the diagonal ,parallel lines in the left top corner indicate wood to be removed completely (whenever the mood strikes me for some wild banging with the mallet ;-)) ... the other marks, the vertical lines and some crosses with numbers on them, are helplines to copy from the clay : i have the claymodel sitting on a wooden board, larger than the model, and then have drawn a rectangular fitting tightly around it, onto the wood. i made rulermarkings on that rectangle in 1cm distance, and transfered several of those rulerlines as vertical and horizontal lines onto my carving wood, to obtain a course grid which helps me placing things.... in the beginning i need lots of measuring to get things placed correctly, later i can see from the carving where things go, and pencil lines will be much less...

Doris, it's always interesting and instructive to see your process, especially from this early stage. I'll be following this thread with interest.

Well Doris I can't wait for your next step, Like Paul I was very interested in the pencil markings...I also use them at the beginning so it gives me a point of focus to where I am going.
Thanks for sharring.
