Mottles - I love doing wood spirits, each one is different and they're fun to do. Have you tried carving them into bark yet?

Linda, I haven't tried bark carving but very interested and will try after the holidays. Your right I don't think any of the ones I've carved so far look to much a like. Maining because I seem to gouge and nick with my tools--something always seems to get cut just where it shouldn't. LOL
Merry Christmas,
Kathy

Okay, he's painted and I can now see what I need to change in the next one. The white in the photos is far brighter than it is in reality but these still give you an idea of what he looks like completed. The background is not stained that is simply the colour of the wood when I put the natural/clear stain on.

Thank you for letting me share this project with you.

Cougar! Where's the rest of him, stuck inside the bark? Or do you entitle that piece...."Cougar in quicksand!" Well done Lindy.

Very nice cougar! Maybe I should revise my opinion of that bark stuff and give it another try!

Thank you all so much for your kind words. It was a lot of fun carving this little devil.

Hey Bob! Well the whole story with this guy is that, just like any cat he got a little too curious and went to investigate this interesting scent in a tree. The tree's original spirit was away on holiday and the tree decided that this would make a wonderful companion for his tree spirit so he thought to surprise him with it upon his return. The tree has since died and when given the opportunity the poor cougar tried very hard to escape. So far he has only succeeded in getting his head and one foot out. But like every good cougar, he is very, very patient and will just wait for the opportunity to get the rest of his body out. Although I doubt the varathane will help his efforts very much as it does kind of seal the wood. Oops.

Lindy, great job! I love the story too! Caught by the tree...perfect! You've got a great carving talent and a great imagination! Thanks for sharing both with us! Deborah
