Thanks all, for the comments on my bark carving.
Al, that's a good suggestion for working around that flaw at the visor. I guess at this point that area could go either way. I know if I add the feather it will make for a very fragile carving, and a good chance the feather could get broken off at some point. The bark is only 1/4" thick at the top of the hat where it meets the back, I had carved a little deeper than I should have here trying for more depth. This piece of bark is going to have to be mounted on a separate piece of wood for displying to prevent any breakage there. I should finish the carving tonight and will post the finished piece.

I am trying to finish up some other work I am doing so that I can run through your tutorial. I just may have to split my efforts.

Just what I was thinking. I tried to explain to my wife that I needed to go to Colorado. She asked what for. I NEED to take a carving class and...
She cut me off right there

...anyway I love your faces too and this piece is fantastic too. Maybe someday I'll make it out for a class.
