Jimbronaugh, Whats nice about the bark off of cottonwood trees, is that in most cases, it's free. I look for dead standing trees, usaualy found along rivers or where ever there is water. The bark pulls right off of these trees, and sometimes has already fallen off and can be found at the base of the tree. I dont know where you live but here in Colorado and the northern states , it grow fairly thick. So find a old cottonwood tree, and grab a bunch of bark to carve, if the first 10 carvings or so dont work out to your expectations, just keep at it until it does, no time has really been wasted, because you learn by repetitious carving. Woodspirits are a good place to start.
