| | A Close Call On The River! Remember in my last post I said you sometimes reach a point where you can make or break a project? Well, I came pretty close on this one when applying the last coat of Epoxy resin. I explain what happened in my Blog titled "Sinking a Canoe!" While you may have aready read that post I've added additional photos.
After I set the two little ducks in place and walked around the piece about a dozen more times it was almost 6 pm. I made my way up the hill and collasped in the recliner totally drained. I had started the painting process at around 12:30. At 4:30 this morning I went down the hill and was pleased to see that everything worked out great. This one will be a true classic! |

Wow , until you gave the reference with you there in the photo , I had no idea how nice a piece this really was . Hopefully I will get some time to read the blog.

| | Re: A Close Call On The River! That is one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen!
1. Did you carve the wooden branch projecting from the water above the canoe, or is it "real"?
2. Are the symbols on the canoe inlaid, or painted?
3. Where did you get a copy of my mother-in-law's picture for the moose?
4. Are you entering this piece in a show or competition in the near future? |

Looks fantastic, thanks again for sharing.
So are you saying the problem you experienced was the time it took the epoxy to cure? Was the product you replaced it with another epoxy?
Thanks. |

| | Re: A Close Call On The River! Lynn, I totally agree.. this is truly a classic! I looked at the last steps and the paint just made it exceptional... Such patience! Those little ducks must be pretty brave, or curosity killed the cat! lol My little ducks on the pond can get too brave when a dog comes near the pond and I hold my breath.. This is truly a masterpiece I don't see how you could let go of this one.. I can't wait to see it all put together...Gee it makes me want to try a little puddle with a duck in it now...but I would have the resin all over everything.. lol Congratulations.. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful talent with us... Charlotte |

| | Re: A Close Call On The River! Thanks for all the comments. The second and final coat is also an epoxy. I've tried Clear Cast, the stuff you embed things in, but it just never seems to work out. The epoxy give a real hard finish that stands up better to the constant touching by people who just can't seem to keep their hands to themselves.
The tree is modeled using a wire armature and an acrylic compound. The canoe is made in three pieces...a bottom and two sides. Once it's glued up and dry I carved it. Just paint..no inlay. If you could look under the water you'd see the canoe and design cause I painted in there too.
I just finished doing the beadwork on the Indian and he looks great. Tomorrow everything will be ready to assemble and the carving will be mounted in it's base. All told, it took me about three years to finish this piece. |

| | Re: A Close Call On The River! Three years! And I was thinking you just whipped it out in a week or two. Just kidding of course.
Classic Indeed. Excellent in so many ways. Truely a piece of art. Can't wait to see it completely assembled. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
