thanks everyone, I decided to paint the eyes, they don't seem to have any life, so I did, and now that means I have to do a bit more work on him lol.......isn't there a post about not knowing when to stop?

Oops.. its basswood and about 4 1/2 - 5 in. high including the base

Great job on him Dave! I'm thinking he should be painted though, not heavy, just washes of color, more like a stain. Either way, you did good!! Deborah

Great job on the soldier Dave, the eyes give it more focus. Doesn't matter what side he was on, his facial expression says it all. Great carving.
