Default Chip carving cross

This is a chip carved cross that I made by modifying one of Susan's patterns. It is 13 1/2" X 9" made of basswood and stained brown mahogany.

Roger,

Two aspects of your chip cross really catch my eye. First is how much control you have over the depth of the cuts. It appears to me that you reached the same depth of the wide area cuts in the very tight areas. That makes for an excellent chip work example. Too often those tight areas are so much more shallow then the easier to reach wide areas ... nice job!

Second is your success with the mahogany stain over the basswood!!!! Really nice as we all have had the experience of the basswood spotting.

I'm impressed!

Susan

Sue, What works for me with the stain is to spray a coat of sealer on the piece before I carve it then another light coat before I stain it. Thanks!

I really like this one above all, although I'm not sure why. Maybe the flow of the interlocking loops. Keep up the great work!

Rog,
The best of the three crosses. Very well executed.
I love the way the loops flow to the three upper ends.
Keep em coming.

Beautiful piece of work and art. My eye just keeps wandering around and around the design like in a whirlpool. I admire chip carving greatly especially, I guess, since it is about the only type of carving that I will definitely never attempt. Just too much precision and control for me.

That's exceptional carving, Roger. I'm not surprised, but I am duly impressed.
