Roger,

What did you do your texturing or "stippling" with?
It is used very nicely and offsets the chip work wonderfully, I'd say.

Thanks again,

RussL.

The stippling is done using a single punch. Yes it took a long time, 8 hours of taping with it. Approx. 5 taps per second which is around 144,000 taps! Those didn't just happen all at one sitting. I have tried different types of stippling and this one has the most pleasing to the eye affect. Thanks for asking!

A simply superb study in harmony and balance. The subtle but Oh so important contrasts of textures set off against the faceted planes of this jewel of a carving. Not one single thing dominates to upset the flow of the piece which is what your eye does as you take it all in,,flows from one area to the next. In every area there is something to look at,,in detail,,precision,,hard lines playing off soft curves. A great carving in execution as well as design. Again,,,harmony permeates all areas of this piece.
Great work Roger!

Roger,
I am stunned, the piece is gorgeous!!! I have done some chip carving and seeing someone turn out a piece as beautiful as this gives me hope and encouragement.

If you don't do well in Dayton I will be very surprised.

I know someone else asked but what chip carving knife do you use and I am also curious about what method of sharpening you use. You don't have to give out any secrets if you don't want to though.

Again congratulations on a job well done.

Joseph, no trade secrets here, I use a John Dunkle knife and use only a leather strop and yellowstone compound to sharpen all my chip carving knives. If you are interested in a knife and strop I sell them. If anyone is interested send me an PM and we will go from there. Thanks!

Terrific chip carving as usual Rog! I took about 5 or 6 nails, honed and sharpened a point on them, cut the heads off, crazy glued them together and put them in a piece of dowel for a handle...this made short work of stipling...I made this round, but you could lay them out lengthwise or whatever pattern you want. I used them mostly by hand, but you could lightly tap the dowel with a light mallet if you wanted.....just an idea!

Not a bad thought Hi Ho. I'll try that the next time. Thanks!
