I thought you might be interested in my large picture frame commission due to its size. The picture frame will be approx. 3'-6" X 6'-6" and made out of basswood.
This is the picture and the original frame.
The picture is of the Peary expedition to the North Pole. The owners’ only requirement for the designs was that I keep with the pictures theme. I spent a lot of time on research and found that Henson was a big part in this as was Peary so I chose to include him in the design. I also found that Peary designed and built the sleds used on the journey so I used that design also. I used rope because that element was essential to the success of the expedition. The partial globes top and bottom were used to help tell the story and of course the dates of when Pearys' assault on the North Pole started and ended.
I first had to get an appropriate frame profile so with the lighting the chip carvings would show up without taking away from the picture.
I then made a corner sample of what I proposed for frame and design then I had the owner approve it.
Completed carvings and on to my painter for the final finish.
I will post the completed frame after I get it back and put together.
