| | Change of Pace Hi everyone I thought I would divert myself from my usual relief carvings and try and do something different. I tried to carve a friendship cane segment of an old man and carve a civil war soldier from memory. Feels good to me but I know I have to detail and some work on the left leg(seems a little bigger) and such but thought I would show what I am doing today. Let me know what you think!

| | Re: Change of Pace hi ron :-) ... very nice to see you try something new, i love when people do this ... i dont know what friendship cane is, but your carving looks well start. yes, you are right, his left leg is wider from from view. i think you can correct that by shaving off a little wood from the inside of his left leg ... just another little observation, is not really that important i think, is may be you can make this back a little like an s shape ? then he maybe would look more relaxed, but i dont know if you want that... i really like the start, and am looking forward to progress :-) |

| | Re: Change of Pace To feel the detail like the face etc. I take a 3/16 or 1/4 dowel about 6" long and put the end in a pencil sharpener and make a point to feel with. This way I can feel tight areas and if it gets cut I just resharpen it without damaging the knife edge. When I first started using this method Katy said I was smarter than I looked.

| | Re: Change of Pace Nice job Ron! Personally I like the stiff back... makes him look like he's just snapped "to" and is saying "Yes Sir!" It's a military thing!
Keep up the great work.
