| | Chainsaw carving of a Cougar Hi gang just me just thought I would let you know I opened my big mouth one day at the grandsons school and volunteered to do a carving of their school mascot the Cougar. I am carving it at the school, I arranged for barriers to be set up and eye goggles for all the students so they could watch the progress. This is just the roughing out process what I am endeavoring to do is to have the Cougar immerging from the log. Any suggestions would be really appreciated as this is something really new to me. Talk about stepping out of my comfort zone I tried to talk them into a tree spirit but they really wanted a cougar. The log is a piece of white pine four feet high and twenty inches in diameter

This looks pretty good. I know this is just in a rough out stage. I would double check the eyes. The outside corners look a bit high to me. This site has some nice reference photos. http://www.freepumapictures.com/wallpaper/112.html This one is really close to what you are working on. |

| | Re: Chainsaw carving of a Cougar Thanks Brian that is a great picture and you are absolutly right the eyes are much too high. I will adjust them as I havent taken the face back to where I want it yet. There will be more pictures to come next week I hope.

| | Re: Chainsaw carving of a Cougar Looking good so far, good job with the picture RoadKingMN you couldn't have found one closer. I find carving something like this a profile picture really helps, it sets everthing in it's place. http://huntingsociety.org/MtLion1.jpg this one might work, I'm sure there are better ones.
good luck, I'd like to do something like that one day |

| | Re: Chainsaw carving of a Cougar It appears you have volunteered for a challenging piece. Are you contemplating carving in the round. Looks like you have plenty of wood.

| | Re: Chainsaw carving of a Cougar Dave I had thought about carving it in the round and in fact I would have been better had I done this. It is very hard to carve a three dimentional carving into a stump. I have done it this way as the school crest is done like you see the carving and I want it to be as close to the school crest as possible. It has however tweeked my interest of trying a full size one in the round once I get caught up on all my commissions.
Thanks again
