| | Re: Celtic spoon in prog HI Gilly,
I REally like the spoon. Knotwork is one of my favorite things to carve. Honestly, I don't think the stain looks bad at all. If you are really unhappy with it, you may just lightly sand it on the high spots to give it a lighter look on the knotwork and let the recesses stay darker showing off the carving, but I don't think it's neccessary.
When I carve spoons, I always prepare it for use even if it's just going to hang on the wall. Mineral oil is non-toxic, and I have had it recommended to me from many different spoon carvers as being non-ransid no matter how long it's on the spoon. So, while I'm carving the spoon, the color of the wood is only slightly richer after the oil is applied and I don't have the sudden color change shock that you experienced. I hope it grows on you, because it really does look great.
I have never tried birch before either. That was quite an undertaking.
Congrats on a job well done!

| | Re: Celtic spoon in prog Gilly Nice job on the spoon and great looking knot work. The stain problem like dave said a pre stain treatment or you could use a gel stain you can control the dark and light spots better. Just an idea. Ron |

bart | The bowl of the spoon is 4" wide, so I guess if you were Jethro Bodine, it's perfect for oatmeal or icecream...LOL
