Thanks folks, I'm still not happy with the stain job, maybee a few coats of oil hand-rubbed may satisfy me.........we are our own worst critics!

You did a good job Gilley! Next time try the sanding or pre stain sealer first and then the min wax......min wax is about all I use anymore.

HI Gilly,
I REally like the spoon. Knotwork is one of my favorite things to carve. Honestly, I don't think the stain looks bad at all. If you are really unhappy with it, you may just lightly sand it on the high spots to give it a lighter look on the knotwork and let the recesses stay darker showing off the carving, but I don't think it's neccessary.
When I carve spoons, I always prepare it for use even if it's just going to hang on the wall. Mineral oil is non-toxic, and I have had it recommended to me from many different spoon carvers as being non-ransid no matter how long it's on the spoon. So, while I'm carving the spoon, the color of the wood is only slightly richer after the oil is applied and I don't have the sudden color change shock that you experienced. I hope it grows on you, because it really does look great.
I have never tried birch before either. That was quite an undertaking.
Congrats on a job well done!
Thor

Very nice work Gilly! Carving out the spaces between the links must have given you fits.

Gilly Nice job on the spoon and great looking knot work. The stain problem like dave said a pre stain treatment or you could use a gel stain you can control the dark and light spots better. Just an idea.

A wood conditioner would help with the even coat stain. All in all Gilly, Outstanding spoon.

The bowl of the spoon is 4" wide, so I guess if you were Jethro Bodine, it's perfect for oatmeal or icecream...LOL
