| | cedar indian Here is a commission I have started on. Life size cedar indian. I got the body, head and right arm out of the log but everything else has to be added. I just got the legs on . Now I have to had the left arm. At this rate I will be able to begin actual fun (carving) this weekend.
Any suggestions for a base so this can stand on a porch and not fall over? I was thinking of 3/4" plywood and carve rocks for him to be standing on. |

| | Re: cedar indian You have quite a project going there...a lot of work with the adding on of parts. I am not a chainsaw carver so I'll be watching to see (and learn) how it developes.

| | Re: cedar indian Great looking project, should be fun to carve. As for a base, carved rock sounds good, use a heavy wood to give the bottom weight. Looking forward to seeing your progress with this.

| | Re: cedar indian As far as a base goes, you could find a cut-off from a 30" dia log, strip the bark off and use the cut-off as is. One thing to remember if you go this route (well, OK, two things)......make sure the log cut-off has dried before mounting so all the cracks and checks are there. And either way, mount only one foot securely to the base, so that if further checking should occur, it won't put stress on the carving if the feet happen to be on opposite sides of the check.

| | Re: cedar indian Ok after Thursday, I have it all glued together. Now I am ready to start carving. I plan on starting at the head and detailing on down. I am trying to decide whether to add a couple feathers or a war bonnet for his head. |

| | Re: cedar indian I am new to this "glue together the piece" stuff. I can add a lot of details (feathers, strap for gun,...) but that will make it pretty fragile. Should the extra fragile things be screwed on so they can be removed for transportation of does that make it a mannequin? |
