In the States , a barbers pole looks like a candy cane , red and white twisted stripes . So I tried to do a twisting curl, High ridge - Low cut twised around in front of her her Left side.
Looks like it came out pretty well , most all of it was done using an 8/10 and rolling it as I made the cuts.
Chris Pye hints at this style of using a gouge in this edition of Woodcarving. Where he shows how a gouge will follow itself in cutting a circle. Same

but adding the third plane of an angle so you get a round spiral turn.
