| | Re: Carving long curly hair in England Very nice work. I love the flow of the hair that you have created. You have created such a smooth finish although you may have more work to do? Please continue to post the updates.

| | Re: Carving long curly hair in England Hello again I have had a busy weekend, finally got brave and did the mouth and chin, which I had been avoiding as they were right in the end grain, now I 'm trying to get it done by the end of the week ( might be a bit over - ambitious that one, but a bit of suspense won't hurt!)These long sweeping cuts, like between the lips and between the locks of hair, I start with a long line from the skew chisel then open them out with a smallish no.5, is that the normal way to do them? It's hard to get the material out of the very bottom of the cut cleanly....maybe one of you folks can help me on that one? |

It's coming along nicely. I was waiting to see what you would do with his nose. It worked out very well. Great line to his lips too.
Can't help you with your question. Great job.

| | Re: Carving long curly hair in England Eleanor,
The 5 is a pretty flat chisel, but from the picture it is difficult to see the cuts.
Are you running the number five up and down from nose to chin or across?
Or getting a miss match from the Skew cuts?
Personally, I would use a 11/1 gouge. in the lips. I don't like the V tool inside of the lips because of the pull effect and the drag angle . But the small 11 gives me a bit more control and a round effect which still gives me a good touching look .

| | Re: Carving long curly hair in England Hi guys, thanks so much for your help,
my v tool was a bit big to get in the lip line; it is a 90 degree one and I don't have access to a narrower v. So I have been trying to do it with a wickedly pointy skew, and practice ( on the long strands of hair) seems to be improving my cuts - you cut the one side and then the other, at first the point was not always finding the bottom of the first cut, but now it is doing so a bit more often. I was opening out the curves, Garry, by working the no. 5 across the lips to make a bit of a Cupid's bow, seemed to work OK, if nerve-wracking!!OK I am off to put a few hours in now, I'll show you what comes out.... |

| | Re: Carving long curly hair in England Thanks Eleanor,
I though perhaps , but I was not sure as with that gouge it would be easy to apply lip creases into the lips. Nice work .
