Default Carving at the Cottage

Hi Folk's,
It has been a while since I posted, so here are a few things that I have been doing at the cottage between swatting black flies.

Bob, your bears are really good. I especially like the one holding the lantern. The way you did the fur around his nose/face looks cool!

Well , now the bears are about 98% chainsaw, with some chisel work around the eyes and mouth, but not much. I have a 3200 RedMax that I picked up in Ridgway this winter at the Chainsaw Carving Rendezvous.
When I first started doing bears, I roughed them out with the big chainsaw and used everything I could get my hands on the finish them.
Now I rough one out in about 2 hours and then the next day I switch to the Red Max to define and texture and generally finish up. I bought some 9/16 marbles for the eyes from Bailey's and that is the final touch.
After I chainsaw texture , I normally burnt everything with a propane torch and rub down with a wire brush. I add some colour of leave as is and seal up with some Spar varnish.
I do have a book on carving Bears, but as Colin said in an earlier post the ears end up much to big . My first are all ready for take off as in Dumbo the flying elephant.

Wow Bob those bears are really good especially the one in the stump. You really have the expression down pat. You will have to drop over and give me some lessons. If not I am not taking you to Ridgway next year. LOL.
