Default Canoe Paddle

I took a break from carving wood spirits to try my hand at carving a canoe paddle. Not as easy as I thought. Hopefully you can make out the wood burning design. Still have to oil the wood.

Good looking design, Patrick.
It's definately a fish carrying an eagle.
Just kidding, I see those talons in the fish back.

Well done Irishman, a paddle isn't a project to be taken on lightly. A lot of work in those. Beautiful job! Love the design.

No, I can't take credit for the design. I did a search on the internet for Inuit art and this design came up. I carve out Greenland paddles to use in my other leisure time pursuit - kayaking - and burn in Inuit designs on those as well.

Pretty good paddle and design. Have you thought of expanding the design to fill the entire paddle blade?

Of course, if you did that, you might not want to ever use it...

Whitecree - if I make the design any bigger, it will be easier to pick out the flaws. Since completing the blade I noticed an imbalance of wood on one side of the blade. Its amazing what you see under different lighting. I may try the full face of the blade when I do another Greenland paddle however.

I used to wonder why my brother always did the final carving steps on a paddle - or almost anything - outside on a nice, sunny day. Nothing like natural light for spotting the boo-boos.

And who says you make errors when putting a design in place? That isn't an error, it is a "spontaneous design element".

Great looking paddle, Patrick! How are you going to finish it? I've been using a canoe for years to fish out of and my wooden paddles always get cracks due to the damage to the finish on the tip.
