| | Re: Bull Elk by Cedar Tree Alright.... Here we go.
Great suggestions all. I may need to do several version to try them all! I am planning to do a shallow relief. Most areas will be 1/8" to 1/4" deep. Most of the shading and features will be put in with stain (I am a better painter than carver)
The foot and body will stay behind the log but I did bring the branch in front of the elk on the left side. I was too far along with the drawing and rough carving to change the posture of the elk (good suggestion though).
As far as the rack goes, the picture I used was indeed an imperfect rack. I tried matching up the two sides but I just could not get comfortable with it. Susan, I did lengthen the back set of tines and added one point to match a little better. Believe it or not the picture of the elk I used and the drawing are very close..... The elk just has problems!
Kind of ironic, I often do not finish one feature of a drawing, carving or painting. It has become a habit, usually creats character. In this case the elk imbalance will create the character... I hope!
Again, thank you for all the great ideas. I love using this forum to get input and ideas. The attached picture is very early in the carving but you can see how I am using the blocks of wood, hope it works out, only time will tell.

| | Re: Bull Elk by Cedar Tree Beautiful drawing! I can't wait to see the completed work.
I wish I could draw more than stick figures. I can paint a scenery but not draw it and I haven't been able to draw animals since I was a kid.
Thanks for sharing the project with us! |
