Well Lonnie,

Educate me, I've never waxed wood before.
But I'll try anything once. What do I need?

Thanks

Doug

Upon further research and input frm fellow carvers, a wash it is and the finish shall be a satin poly brushed on.
I have the fire hydrant well under way, more later.

Thanks,
Doug

I'm sorry Doug that was my one liner from karate kid. I usually do a light wash with acrylics and then let it dry,and then seal it with deft semi-gloss,usually 2 or 3 light coat. Let each coat dry completely and make sure you've got good coverage otherwise the watco wax you will be applying next will soak into any spots not covered with deft and this will spell disaster, and then coat it with watco wax dark walnut. Let it get into all the crevices and you can use Q-tips to pull it out of crevices that you don't want it left real heavy. Give it a try on a practice carving ,see what you think.

Here he is post first wash, pre finish.
Thinking about re-appling wash to hydrant too pink.

I haven't had time to carve for a little while hope to get started on the base.

More later,

Doug

Doug,
He looks great!! maybe instad of a second wash on the entire hydrant, you just rewash the deeper areas with a darker red, thus creating more depth...(just a thought)
