| | Re: Branch woodspirit Hello Mottles,
The little wood spirit is about 4" long x 3/4" aroundn not sure what kind of hardwood it is. But if you are going to carve one don't use pine unless it is white or sugar pine. I use hardwood branches to carve mine. I am finding that I love Sycamore,it is kind of hard but is not bad about splitting when green and holds great detail. I will be posting a new branch Santa out of sycamore and also a branch wood spirit our of a spalted wood ( not sure what kind), tomorrow. Have fun with your new knife!

| | Re: Branch woodspirit Yeah! Sycamore is outrageous! I Haven't carved a small branch out of it, but the trunk wood is incredibly beautiful!

| | Re: Branch woodspirit Your right Wade! I have some limbs about 8-10" around, and am looking for one being cut down so I can get some bigger peices. Every thing I have been carving is small, but I have finally gotten tools to do bigger carvings, jsut need to make a fixture to handle them and get up the nerve to try bigger stuff.

| | Re: Branch woodspirit Gary,
I know this is an old picture, had it up here in a thread, Filling Cracks, in March or so, but it's Sycamore. Incredible wood! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...ra/BOWL003.jpg
Sycamore is definately one of my very favorite woods, for all its' color.

| | Re: Branch woodspirit Thanks Gary, not sure what kind of pine we have up here. What about juniper wood? Plenty of that around too...lol
I bought a small block of basswood at the hobby store maybe that is what I should use for now.
Thanks for the help,
Kathy
PS: Wade, your sycamore bowl is gourgous! |

| | Re: Branch woodspirit Beautiful Bowl Wade! I sure love the colors in that bowl you did! All the Sycamore around here is white-white inside. I have turned some small peices of it also, and it turns great too>
