Another nice one Gary. You definitely have lifted the bar as for carving Santas.

Thanks for the comments!
Your right Collin, I am looking for a tree to carve in. Everything I have been doing is fairly small and I do want to try a large carving. I have the tools to do one except for the chainsaw, just not the oppertunity so far.

Gary,

It will be great! The chain saw is a nice option, but I don't use one. I think it's because I hate loud noise =)

Guess this was one of those carving surprises which comes around every once in a while and it is "those" that sometimes end up being the best un's! In your case maybe this spirit was one of Santa's gifts to YOU!?!

When I am trying to learn a new form or type of carving I will do a lot of sketching on the wood and/or trace on a pattern then try to stay right on course as closely as possible. However, as the years of carving have continued to accumulate I find myself "straying" more and more from the comfort of that more predictable way of carving and I suppose that I now lean more towards the creative side of carving. I now tend to make it up as I go a lot more than I did in the past and in doing so I don't always know just what I'm gonna end up with in the end and THAT has made carving more exciting for me lately. You might say that I get a lot more surprises than in the past! I guess there was some truth to the old saying that the "journey" is more important than the destination!

Nice job and thanks for sharing!

Hi Gary, terrific branch santa I was wondering what size and type of wood?
Idea I'd like to try one we have lots of pine around us--thoughts of just scouting out some that have fallen on the ground. Do I have to let it dry really well first. Sorry for the beginner questions--I have my knife now and eager to try it out. Talking Saving the cottonwood root for when I'm more experienced..tee hee
