Default bookcase decorator spoon

I carved this from a small bookcase that fell apart on me when I leaned on it.
I fell on my knees and a nail head went into my hand.
Got a hammer,, and dismantled it while bleeding all over. I didn't care about the blood at that moment or that my knees and hand hurt, because I was kind of having a hot headed episode.
It made me feel better using the hammer on it.

I don't know what the wood is, maybe oak, maybe butternut?
This was the wood I was wondering about the smell in another thread.

I roughed it out with my scroll saw and left the ends on so I could secure it better to my work table. One of the pictures has the boards from the bookcase and another spoon I will carve from it.
The size is about 21" tall by 4" wide. It's about 1/2" thick or so in some places.I used all sorts of tools to carve it, even used my pocket knife a little. Lots of sand paper too!
I put 2 coats of natural color Watco Danish oil finish on it.

I'm donating it to a fund raiser for one of the local sheriffs and his wife. They were in a terrible motorcycle wreck a couple of months ago and have all kinds of medical bills. I would of liked to have done a better job on it, but I had to get it done because the event is this Saturday.
I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out though all in all.
Critiques are welcome and appreciated.

More pictures and the last one is the finished piece. Sorry, the pictures aren't in the right order.

I don't know what kind of wood it is but I know quality when I see it. Beautiful work and a good cause.

Forgot the back view of how it will hang. 2 screw eye hooks with a piece of copper wire. I pre drilled the holes so the wood wouldn't split when I screwed the hooks in. It is to thin to have a hole from which to hang it.

Hi Sharon I think they look great and should bring lots of bids at the fund raiser. If you get as mad as I do I'm suprised there was any peices of the bookcase left big enough to make these spoons.

Beautiful! Wow, remind me not to cross you! ;-). Sharon, Butternut is about as soft as Basswood, and Oak is pretty hard. Whatever it is, it's very pretty wood. Hope your spoon brings lots of bucks for them.

I totally get going after it with a hammer. One of my favorite lines (from the movie "Drop Dead Fred") is "I love those breaking noises." It comes into play more then it probably should around here ;-)
That being said, I really like it. Beautiful design! I'm sure it will do well at the fund raiser. Thanks for sharing

Eric
