Default Bonsai formed bust progress

This new project really fried my grey matter, so I had to enlist the aid of some new materials and techniques to help me visualize the piece. Talk about heading off on a tangent! Anywho, I am making a plaster mock-up of a hollow bust that will appear to have been formed by a Bonsai.

This will be a three-piece carving with the left and right sides of the head sculpted from cherry, and the hair is still undecided.

I will shoot more pictures as the work progresses. I am so happy to have finally found a way to visualize this thing after a month of trying. I cut the black areas out last night, and when shining a flashlight on it in my darkened shop, the shadows on the wall are incredible.

The thumbnail of the tree below is what I am shooting for, in a sense. It was part of the inspiration.

Whew! That is a jump! What a creative idea, and you will definitely be in for a challenge transforming that clay mock-up into wood. PLEASE keep us posted on the progress. This has really piqued my interest.

That is definitely an out of the ordinary carving and will be interesting to see it develop.

Jax.
