Bitchin berry sticks

That's what my daughter called these hair sticks and said, I want some Mom!!! Christmas is coming soon and I just gave you hair sticks for your 34th birthday! She'll probably get some sooner, because mom is a softie!Just finished two of them this morning. I carved these from huckleberry branches or trunks that were close to the root ball. I only used my moms little pocket knife that I named after her, Evie. I started carving toes on one with the v tool, but got rid of them. i sanded with dry wall sheets and then went to sand paper. I put tung oil, then my formula of beeswax and walnut oil on em. They were fun to do, especially over the weekend, because our grand kids were with us and my 10 year old granddaughter was whittling on a stick while I was sanding. We also picked huckleberries to freeze that day.Oh, and I followed the natural curve of the branch. Hope you like them and get inspired to do something simple but fun like this.

They're great Sharon. Nice wood too. See, I wouldn't have thought about anything like that being a male and all. I would have thought you needed a bow shaped piece for the stick to pierce to be effective. DUH, shows what we men know. Joe.

Pretty sticks Sharon! Bet they 'feel' nice too...never thought of using drywall sheets before, but will give it a try now...they look sooo smooth and have a real 'natural flow' to them...very nice indeed... Continued safe carving to you!

Thank you Merle and glad you liked them! It's always a good day when the g- kids get to come over, especially now that grandma does have to keep them entertained all the time. They built a neat fort out of limbs and ferns, but the little boogers tore it down before I could get a picture!

Hi Joe and thanks! I made a hair fork a couple of years ago and accidentally put a curve in one of the tines. My daughter said it was the best hair holding stick she had. So now I either carve a few cuves in or look for twisted or curving sticks. It's not original though, lots of hair stick makers put a curve in them.

Hi Kenn, thank you for the nice words. The sticks do feel nice. I learned to use the drywall sanding sheets one day while I was selling plants at the farmers market. A man saw me sanding one of my projects with sand paper and told me about them. My husband being a carpenter had some. They work great because the dust goes through the screen instead of loading up on the paper and it lasts a lot longer. I start with 100 grit and then use 180 grit drywall sheets. After that I switch to 220 sandpaper and work up to finer grit.
