This bird hair stick was inspired by one I saw on a Jackie Chan movie which was made of jade. It took me a lot longer to do than I expected, since I dropped it and broke off one fork of the tail. I glued a small piece w/ super glue gel and re-shaped it. Finished w/ Watco Danish oil. It’s 5 ½” long. I don’t know what kind of wood it is, a scrap from a friend. I made this for my wife, who then told me she was giving it to her sister. The left one is finished, the next one not, and the raw wood.

Hi Keoma, Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I was hesitating from posting it since hair sticks is really your area of expertise and I didn't want it to look like I was pushing in. My wife is an incredibly generous person, to a fault. My feeling is once you gtive something away, it ain't yours no more. Whatever the other person does with it is their business. Otherwise, I would end up keeping everything and my hair's too short for the stick.

Hi Kathy, Thank you. I split the scrap in two and will do another hair stick with the other piece, the same bird. I got the idea from the movie, but Keoma gave me two bird books and that's why I decided to do it.

I am really glad to see you making them and also very glad to hear I am not the only one who feels that way The best feeling is to give, when you do it brings on a whole new life to the piece and it is fun to watch grow Thanx for your consideration on my part, but all I can say is Bring it on and bang a gong ! Have fun!

Ron, I think you should take up wood carving as a hobby, I really think you might be good at it one day. Did I say that? WOW, what a great job you did on the hair stick. Tell me something, at the rate you turn things out, do you ever stop long enough to go to bed? Keep 'em commin buddy. Cliff |

Thanks Corey, I'll have to look into rosewood a little more. Cliff, I'm so slow at carving it's a wonder I get anything done. There's so much unfinished I really shouldn't detour, but I do and it's fun. I have to admit, I pm'd Sam Carnes yesterday and actually thought about throwing in the towel. I was tired and frustrated with dealing with my hands. He gave me a lot of encouragement and I bounced back today. The wonderful thing about being here is the support from all the wonderfrul people. I'm sure evryone has problems and face challenges on a daily basis. Sometimes we just hit the wall. I did yesterday. However, when I got up today, I found the wall had fallen down. Must have been the impact of my hit. LOL. Thanks again, Sam.

I saw the title and I'm thinking----a practice stick for bird hair----what has Ron been drinking? Why does he want to carve hair on a bird? Then I looked at the picture and saw your beautiful hair stick with a bird on it and laughed at myself. You did a great job. |
