| | Re: Birch Relief Wow Dylan, this is going to be one terrific landscape. I notice you have even under-cut some areas. That isn't the easist thing to do--well for me anyway. I undercut the antelope horn that I'm working on and it's a delicate task. Can't wait to see the finish!

| | Re: Birch Relief Kathy, I don't know about you but it seems like I always over undercut. If you know what I mean.
Here's the next picture, I've started putting some detail in. Still have a lot of undercutting to do.

| | Re: Birch Relief Dylan, what a terrific job your doing and super composition. I like the way the undercuts create shadow and in turn create depth to the work. I haven't seen any over-cutting Dylan it's all good! I also like the oval format and that you didn't work right up to the edge. I like the flat edges it almost seems to leave and entrance and exit point to the work.
How did you hollow out your oval hand or power?

| | Re: Birch Relief Kathy and Gilly, In this earlier picture you can see the amount of that I removed with power. Also I've been using power a little to help separate the branches.

Dylan | Thanks Dylan, you did a really good uniform job of hogging out the background. I know just the amount of hogging out I did on my reliefs made my hand sore. How deep is your background? Mine have all been 1/2 inch. It doesn't sound like a lot but even in a small format it is! LOL Keep up the good work as I'm learning from you.

| | Re: Birch Relief I had to check your profile again to see how long you have been carving as I am amazed at the diversity in your skill to do different types of carving. I'm still practicing on logs yet I've only been at it for 5-6 months. I'm hoping our local carving instructor will do a course on relief carving as I'm seeing some great work on this site.

| | Re: Birch Relief Kathy, the background is 7/8" deep. Most of the time I go 3/4" but I had a thicker piece of wood this time.
Irishman, if your willing to jump off the deep end there are a lot of good books out there on relief carving. I learned how to do relief carvings from Lora Irish's book Landscapes in Relief.
Here's the latest picture, I think that I've just about got all the major undercutting finished.

Dylan first of all your landscape is coming along so beautifully. The depth you have attained is really terrific. I hope Susan has seen your landscape I know she checks up on us.
I need to locate some thicker board/plank all mine have been 3/8 inch. I don't have Susan's landscape book, but have her wildlife and greenman book. After seeing your work I think I'd better invest in the landscape one.
Keep going your landscape is wonderful!
