| | Bear Claw Necklace Here's the first shot of a little experiment I'm working on. This time I'm doing some of the detail first instead of waiting until the carving is close to being finished. The necklace is doweled to the base and, hopefully, the weight of the head and other detail will not be too much for the mount to support.
The thing has a greenish look as I sprayed on a coat of acid-etch primer for the wire I've run through the claws for reinforcement. When using metal in your carvings that will be painted I would highly recommend going to an auto parts store and buying a can of that type primer as it's the only thing that really works. That grey stuff you can find at WalMart or Lowes just doesn't cut it. The acid etch primer will not flake off.
If you've seen this type of necklace in museums you'll recognize that wire as being the thong that was used to seperate the claws on the real thing. Without it the weight of the claws would cause them to droop downward making for an unattractive appearance.
Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see how this thing works out. Comments welcome a always. |

| | Re: Bear Claw Necklace Not sure I picture how the upper circle works? wouldn't that be behind the neck? This made me think tho that a breast plate would look neat freestanding like this, with the quills or bone or whatever they are and the feathers! I know, I know, take my medicine! |

| | Re: Bear Claw Necklace Lynn .. One can only imagine how your going to finish such a piece .. unfinished it's already a very nice piece .. So we can only wait for the coloring to bring out the realism to it ..
Nice piece ..

| | Re: Bear Claw Necklace Well, like they say....best laid plans! The concept was good but the execution just might not work. I roughed out a head yesterday afternoon and while it fits the necklace okay it just doesn't look the way I imagined it would. Hmmmmm. Going to have to ponder this one for a bit longer.
Dave: That circle of wood is the shell decoration on the neck choaker which is hidden behind it. The necklace goes behind the choaker. |

| | Re: Bear Claw Necklace Even though I am not of the level of carver I would think maybe if the top part was angled backwards more to sort of lay on the shoulders by the neck.
other than that Lynn, Jolly good showing. I know go back in to my own little world. |
