Default Bear & Wolf Relief

Here is my new relief that I am working on. It is Spanish Cedar and is 16 tall 19 wide and 4"thick. We designed this pattern this way so I could carve the bear and wolf in the round. Now if I just had more time to carve on it.

It was suggested by a friend that I explain what it you are looking at if you have never seen one of my patterns before. The pattern is produced by a laser that leaves a raised line for me to follow with my fingers since I can't see what I am carving. The surface of the wood is burned away leaving the cut line or pattern about a 16th of an inch high. This is a pattern system that Ashby and I have been working on perfecting for me for about 4 years now. The pattern is one Garry came up this time to make it a little more challenging for me each time I carve a relief. If you have questions please feel free to ask. Thanks for looking.

Hi Ron, that's going to be a beautiful relief when you are finished. It's interesting how you do it with the laser. I wondered how you started the pattern, that's pretty neat. I look forward to seeing the finished project. Thanks for sharing. Give Pal a doggy treat for me.

Ashby uses his laser to put the pattern on the wood. To start the carving I use a small no. 11 gouge and a bambo pointer to follow the raised line. I then follow the small gouge cut with a knife to create a stop cut. It takes along time but I feel the results are well worth it. It would be allot harder without the help Garry gives me with his laser I am not sure if I could do it.

Hi Ron,
This does look like a challenging project. The details of the bear and the wolf will be terrific when you get to that part. I like the pattern very much. Roughing out is so time consuming by hand, but I enjoy working through it with hand tools as well. Glad to see your newest carving in progress.
Keep us posted.

Ron, So people are a little more aware, no lines are cut into the wood to follow, the pattern is a standard line pattern like everyone else uses. the laser removes 20 - 30 thousands of wood around the lines which turnes it into a braile type pattern the rest is all Ron who changes the pattern as he wants and carves everthing out.
