Wow,,,thanks Ron,,,I had my heart in my throat questioning you about this. I felt awful but knowing something about you I knew you'd understand.I wasn't trying to nit pick,,,but even in Pennslyvania with thousand of barns around here I had never seen anything like this. Truthfully ,,they look really odd. I can't imagine how or why they would be framed like this. They were just so out of place in the rest of the scene I simply had to ask.

Thank you again for your understanding and gracious reply. I feel much better now.

This will be another interesting project to watch. I've never seen windows placed like that either, so I will look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Thanks for posting the pictures Ron.

Nice start Buddy and as always it will be a work of art when you have finished. Mark dont be scared of offending Ron I dont think you could if you tried. He loves to improve everything he does and dont forget he can only carve what Garry lazers for him. He cant see the picture so he is dependent on us to be his eyes. If any of you have suggestions for him how he can improve I know he would welcome them with open arms he is that kind of a person. Heck if he put up with me for three days he wouldnt get upset with anyone.LOL

Ok,

I will give you some information about the windows and why they are like that. I really thought one of you old timers old have told us why the windows were made like that.

I told Ron , last night but I thought someone else would remember, and post.

Mark it wouldn't really be surprising that you would not remember seeing these, and really the way things are today why were would not associate them with what they were designed for.

The barn is in a slight stage of need to repair. The left angled window has a broken hinge. The one on the right is in the proper place. These windows would drop down to open from the outside of the shed. They were used on bird houses, ie: chickens. The inside of the chicken house would be set up to allow the chickens to roost on rails placed up off the ground. And the bottom of the house would allow a small opening for the chickens to go in and out. In the morning you would open the roost windows from the outside to allow the chickens to go out, so when you would go in the house to get the eggs the chickens would have a way to get out as their means of escape is naturally jumping in the air to fly away.

I cleaned enough chicken houses when I was a kid that I should have remembered. After Garry jogged my memory I do recall these. I will have to see if I can simulate a broken hinge or show where the window is sagging from the opening on the one it may help. I do want everyones input on my work so I can improve and as a means of quality control. Colin that was easy I wish it was a longer weekend but maybe we can do it again this year.

I don't know anything about chicken coops ... I always thought it was because most out buildings or lean-to add ons were not much more than pole barn construction. You had the roof rafters on a slant to help prevent rain rot on the flat roof. Then you had the corner posts for the barn. Then one board at the base between the corner posts. The boards just ran from the rafters to the base board ... no 2x4 studs as they cost money.

That left only the roof rafters to support the windows so you hung them from there and the windows ended up on a slant.

Guess my West Virginia/Maryland family must have been far less well off than Garry's or Ron's ... We were so poor we didn't even have dirt to farm, just Appalachian foundation rock .... And hinges ... Who had hinges, we used leather straps and a stick.

The photo attached is one of the old shed on our land. It was constructed sometime in the 40's or 50's. Now imagine that you are not using plywood but scrap wood from around the farm and corner posts. The only strong self-supporting area to hang a window if you are not using studs is the roof rafters.

Anyway .....

Ah Hah! A broken window hanging from it's hinge! Didn't even stop to consider that. I could imagine the one window, even placed like it is,but the second didn't come close to looking like the first and had no rhyme or reason. The one ,though oddly placed ,at least had a symmetry to it .The second window had such an asymetrical look to it,,that I couldn't imagine a farmer framing such an apparently odd shaped window. Now it makes sense to my muddled mind.I held one thought and didn't allow room for other answers to enter.

Ironic how it took a window to shed light on something! ( "window" "shed" "light" O.K. bad puns) But here I failed to stay open to other possibilities. It is so easy to do. I guess it's true that if you want to hide something from someone ,,put it right in front of them. And I fell for it. I had better go back and re-read my Sherlock Holmes.......
I jumped the gun.
