Default Ball in cage

I thought it'd be fun to carve one of these. So I did, and boy-howdy did I have fun! It is 3 inches long and an inch high. Made out of basswood. The writing on the bottom is my initials, my 4th carving, and 2012. I sanded the cage but not the ball. I kinda liked how the ball looks not sanded smooth. I'm not sure whether or not I'm gonna paint it or stain it. Tell me your honest opinion! Carinna

Love to see new carver challenge themselves. You did a good job. I had been carving for a while before I tried a ball in cage. Keep up the good work.

Your ball-in-cage looks great!
I never tire of seeing and whittling whimsies like this.
There is no end to the variations. Keep on going!

n ice one. now try two balls in a box! or three! Keep challenging your skills. Try to get the ball rounder or the box side more perfect and you'll be surprised how much you will improve.

Carinna,,,Nice carving!!! Like many others mentioned above, I held off for a couple of years to carve a similar project... You did just fine with yours and just think of all the things you learned from this little project! Nice work and one you're sure to appreciate more and more over the years plus everyone seeing your work will certainly envy you carving expertise!!! Try another one or two and this time, because of your experience, add all sorts of little fancy carvings to it and really dress it up so you'll knock the socks of 'other newbies' too! Congratulations and safe carving to you! Oh yes...thanks for sharing your neat carving with us!!!

Nice job! Personally, I would stain it rather than use paint. That allows people to see that it is intact and not glued somewhere. If you paint, use a very thin wash to get the stained effect. But aren't they so much fun to do?
