I've been wanting to try a bal in a cage ever since I saw EJ Tangerman's book Whittling & Woodcarving. The next one I try, I'm going to cut out the void spaces with a scroll saw. That should make it a LOT easier.

work more on keeping the ball round, draw the ball in the center of the freespace, keep the spokes over sized then when you knick them it wont show in the final product, thin the spokes last thing and your ball will pop loose on its own my 2 cents worth.... my cages ball is on my pictrail or my blogg

Hey, if you can use wood squared up by saw I guess you can remove interior waste wood with a scroll saw and still call the finished product hand carved. Unless you know how to free the ball with the scroll saw too. I remember my first ball in a cage and the ball barely stayed in. I've done better since but my last one split one corner off and the whole thing fell out.

Terry , Good first try. I think you need to be a bit more agressive on removing the wood off the ball. It looks a bit square to me. You might try getting a cut off staff and making a ball foot on each end. It might help in seeing the roundness your trying to achieve. But Nice step and the improvements are showing. Garry |

I'm with Garry! That is really great for your first ball and cage carving. Balls that don't stay inside the cage are much more common. Tangerman has a ball and cage carving where the ball is a little scotish terrier sitting up and begging. I have always wanted to do that one! Susan |
