Good work. Absolutley go with a darker wood for a base, this will help it stand out. A lighter wood for the base may make the carving look kind of gloomy.

Have you thought of using this as a cane/walking stick handle?

Thanks for the comment.

As a matter of fact I'm currently working, on and off, on a cane with an new smaller eagle head of bass wood....cane is of oak.

But, my #1 priority is the wood duck that's started.
