Default Bald Eagle, front.

Carved from block of butternut wood and is approx. H-5" W-4" . One coat of natural tan shoe wax applied and buffed with a soft brush.

Next, I have to add a base, probably from a piece of butternut.

The side view was out of focus so it was omitted.

Comments on carving welcomed.

Jax.

You have good detail and a dramatic eagle bust. You might want to consdier going with a different wood for the base. If you use the same wood, I think it could take away from the carving rather than enhancing it.

A strong looking Eagle. Looks firm. Nice detail and finish.
I agree with Paul on different wood for base, either darker wood like walnut or a lighter wood. But the same wood would take away from the carving for sure.
Keep it up Jax.

That looks great. I'm kinda partial to eagles. I work for one, sort of!

Nice job! If it were me I would use a darker wood, i.e, oak, on the base also but then use a short length of dowel, also stained dark, to lift the head from the base about at inch at least. This would set the head off much more than if it were anchored directly on the base. It would also give you carving a little more substance by allowing it to 'float' on it's own. If you looks a most busts you'll note that they are also tapered down to the base. A round base would work best as the head base is also fairly round. Just a suggestion.

Jax,
That is a beautiful eagle bust. Outstanding job. Love the finish too - really brings out the detail. I agree go with a darker base. Also, I really like Lynn's suggestion of having it float above the base. Don't forget to show us the finished pic.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I'll drop the idea of using a butternut base and will try out all the suggestions on paper sketches.

Jax.
