Default Re: Back to carving ships, the Harper!

Progress continues on the Harper. She is almost complete. I did some of her running rigging, and installed the topgallant spars, furled for heavy weather, and also the fore and main courses, furled to the bunt. Have cut and shaped a couple of the sails, but not installed them yet, maybe tomorrow. The set sails will be of light acid free paper, and the furled sails are carved from Holly, and attached to the spars.

As you can see from the date of the first posting of this thread, a ship model takes a considerable amount of time. Patience are not only a virtue, but a necessity!

wow, that is a big project, your patince even bigger, and this ship looks so real to me. i was surprised to realsie how small it is, from comparing it to size of the scissors on your desk. wow, i am amazed, how can you see all these tiny things. many detaisl can not be more than 1mm big... oh, and a nice dragon relief, i like that too :-

Well folks, after almost two years of work, The Harper is finished! Of course that two years wasn't steady on just this one project, but it is two years of invested time. I hope the customer is happy with it. I am happy with the results, but glad it's over. I'll stick to larger scales next.

Hi Bob,

Wow, wow, wow. It looks like a real ship weathering a storm. Your photos are first rate, also.

I'm sure your relief after working on this for two years must have been a loud audible sigh. Now you can do some fun easy stuff to relax for a while, or not.

Bob, a lot time and talent involved but I say two years well spent. Fantastic ship and the carving of the sea really sets it off.
Mike
