Default The "Baby Fat" project

The Idea for "Baby Fat" started when some local bird built a nest in my shed right on my favorite fishing poll. I guess I just looked at the nest and decided I needed to make those little creatures into a cartoon.

I didn't start taking pictures until I had the glue up rounded out and some of the feathers carved and burned in. I decided that I needed to make some of the feathers stick out to make the "Fat" look right.

These pictures are of my guests. and some of the early shots of the project.a

This group shows the progress of the feathering of "BF". All in all I ended up carving and burning over 100 individual feathers. These pictures do not include the top 2 rows of feathers which I decided needed to have an upward curl.

This last group includes a couple pictures of the project sitting in the nest I made from some material made for making wreathes.

The final three pictures are of a painted "BF" and you can see the last 2 rows of feathers with the upward curl.

It was a fun project but if I ever do one like it again I won't attach the wings until I'm ready to paint. I had to re-glue each several times. The last was just 2 days ago when the dog jumped up on the couch then onto the piano and knocked it off.

Thanks for looking.

That's really a nice looking project. The whole "BF" looks good, but I especially like they way you did the raised up feathers - it really adds another dimension to it. Thanks for sharing

What an ingenious way to handle the fluff! My hat is off to you for all of that work.
The results speak for themselves. Excellent project!
Thanks for showing it to us with the progressions photos. I never would have imagined how you accomplished it..

Hi Paul,

That's a great fat carving. I know all about burning feathers, a lot of work. I like the way you added the feathers around his head.
