Default Attack of the Wooden Rabbits!

I saw the movie "Wallace and Gromit Attack of the Were Rabbit" and loved the little clay rabbits so much, I thought I would try to carve one. Having 2" x 2" stock of butternut, here are the results thus far. I love the grain and color of butternut so much, I am only going to paint the eyes, teeth, and inside of the ears. I will let the rest unpainted so that it gives the appearance of a brown rabbit and you can see the grain!

Great bunnies, Butternut is such a great wood to carve. Love your idea of just painting the eyes. Are you going to burn any of the body?

Bob,

Thanks! And yes, I will outline the eyes, nose, paws, tail and toes to accentuate the carving. I will see how this works out and make adjustments on subsequent rabbits as I carve them.

Thanks!

How neat Gary! I haven't seen the movie yet (sure with grandchildren that I will!). It will be fun to take 'extra' notice of the bunnies when I do, thanks to you! Deborah

Thanks for the feedback!

One thing I noticed about butternut while carving these bunnies...the wood has a very aromatic rich smell, especially the freshly carved chips! Maybe I can create a butternut aftershave cologne......

Those ears and buck teeth made me smile. Great job! I also appreciate what I assume are the dark shadows in your pictures which really show the detail well.

Thanks for letting us see 'em!

Default Re: Attack of the Wooden Rabbits!- Update!!!!

Folks,

Well, here are the first two rabbits done. As planned, I painted only the eyes, nose, teeth, and inside of the ears and left the rest of the carving in the natural butternut appearance. I was pretty happy with the way these turned out and like the idea of a painted carving that does not get mistaken for a ceramic piece! I think I will do a few more of these once I obtain some wood!
