| | I was asked by my son for a lion headed staff I am not sure how I will finish it , but while it is in process I would like your opinion on how I did on the lion head. I wanted it bold , And decided to stylise it a bit.
Does it look right ?

I have never tried anything quite like this, so looking at a pic while carving is a new experence for me. If I could draw it would help but ... I guess it wouldn't be me =)

| | Re: I was asked by my son for a lion headed staff Ash, I think as far as the lions head is concerned--because it is stylized the drawing is fine. I think the work you have done so far is really nice. I love the grain of the wood and fits the lions mane really well.

| | Re: I was asked by my son for a lion headed staff I knew it was a lion right away. I like the way you adapted the wood shape into his head and mane.

sometimes when you start cutting things look ok but just seem to not be quite right.
Marci the wood is mahogany. And has some really strong grain lines in it. Now if I can put the rest of it together where it looks good should finish with a nice staff.

| | Re: I was asked by my son for a lion headed staff Ash.....I'm following your Lions head staff with interest, have had a similar thought running through my mind, but an altogether different lion shape. For a cane of course, so he wouldn't be sitting up like yours. Nice start, I'd adjust the profile a touch, coming down from the tip of the nose, inward a bit more on an angle, towards the mouth. The angle of the bridge of the nose and the line from the tip of the nose to the top of the mouth should be about 90 degrees.

| | Re: I was asked by my son for a lion headed staff Thanks Bob that worked.
The angle in puffed up the jowels causing them to be more of the puffed pillow look. They look right now. Before they seem to be hanging.
