Hi- Ho Has to be Jackson, that was the request. But the issue has been setteled , They are very happy and my mother will be as well.

Ok here's the answer. This Stonewall will be finished and photoed. This photo will be displayed with the new Jackson portrait , that is to be completed before the auction. And they will get a second carving for the event next year. This was their offer, when they saw the carving.

This I agreed to, so I will be pretty busy the next couple of weeks. When they saw the carving , it was more than they wanted and felt that it would not bring the value they felt it was worth. So they requested a simplier carving.

Ash

Glad to hear that Ash. So there is good sense and decency left in the world after all. Congratulations.

Many organizations seeking donations of art for auction get prints of originals, and like it or not, prints cost NOTHING to reproduce (well, almost). An original, one of a kind piece is of a much higher value.

And it sounds like Ash is doing this piece as a favor to a friend as much as a straight out donation, so my previous nasty post has to be modified some. Ash, you've got yourself a dillema!

Al

Sorry to disagreed Al, but having prints made off your original is very expensive! ask me how I know

ash , I think such a piece should be copied and in a variety of woods.
I would use a dupli-carver and do the finishing touches myself (yourself)and that way some collectors would be happy to pay a decent price. Do you know anyone with a duplicarver?.... Nice tool....... doing one at a time It is not always any faster than doing with our hands and tools....the good part is with that machine does not need inspiration
we're all glad it worked out good for you.

Art,
I know this will sound a bit strange, and time has a way of changing our feelings and at some point may change mine.
But when I started this project, I said I would never make another Jackson portrait like this one. To me if it is a one of a kind then it should be a one of a kind.
I have only been carving for 8 months , Although I started last May, real life jumped in the way and I had to set it aside for 4 months. Durning that time I did not carve a single item or a pick up a piece of wood. I have become very happy with the change in my carvings that has taken place.
I am very please in the thought that others would want to have a copy of this carving , but at this point I have so many other ideas that I want to do, that to put time into copying this work , would take time from the next, and I really do not what to give up that time. Many of the ideas which I have right now I can not wait to see how they will turn out, I now have a book that sits on my desk with things I want to do .
And another with things I have to do. I have two sons, Although my mother will for present have this Jackson, there will be a time it will be given to one of my sons, I will produce a similar carving out of the same piece of Basswood for my other son of Robert E. Lee.
I think that they should go together and would compliment each other. As the generals were close friends, and each always felt supported by the other.

So you see , there in lies the issuse time , carvings , and desire to do more makes it hard to look behind when your looking so far ahead.

Gary, for a "short time" carver, or ANY carver as far as that goes, Stonewall is a spectacular piece of work!
