Another look at Marv Kaisersatt for the birds

Another look at marv's for the birds carving,
i have found photos and patterns all over the internet. but nothing on the for the birds carving.
its a complicated busy carving 7x10 " but i cant find a pattern for sale..

so im wondering if anybody has bought or seen this book of siminar patterns sold here

I think this would be a nice pattern/project to keep for the back burner...to work on a little at a time..

To my knowledge thats the only set of patterns he has published (also included in his book). I attended both of his seminars at the open house and follow his work but thats all there is. His book is currently out of print so whatever is left out there is all there is to get at this time. BTW, he has no current plans for a follow up to his book.
He is working on a possible article that will show how he goes from concept to finished carving (single piece) we hope to see in the spring. It is of the baseball player below.

I love marvs style of highlighting the every day little quirks then over emphasizing the little things so they take over the carving.
the carving exhibited and the one before of the same 2 knotheads putting up the pole with cement spilled all over, or the sawmill where they are 2 men working on a plank with plumbing tools to make it fit through the blade of the saw just tickle me.

lots of action packed into one chunk of wood to show style craft and all the humor that could possibly fit without being too busy..

i just wish the folks that produced the pattern books would elaborate more on which patterns are in his books,

i checked ebay and halfbay but no hits on his name speling

being the seminar pattern book was for his daily classes i don't believe the patterns i want is in them..

but still i wish to know some of the dimensions of the bird house carving as i want to cut from a photo out of 2 inch thick stock. but closer look at the photo makes me think the carving is on 1 inch thick wood..
and paying $45.00 for the 2 books and still not having the pattern ain't what i want to do..

Thomp, what two pattern "books' are you talking about, Marv only has one instructional book as far as I know , he does have a pattern package might even be two, one came with the early editions of his instruction book and there is a pattern package listed on the Whillocks web site but I don't know if its the same package that came with the book?
I can tell you whats in the package I have , no pattern for any scene carving such as "for the birds" just individual caricature patterns.

According to MWilleson (Mike) after taking a 2 hour seminar with Marv Kaisersatt (see link below):

BTW--I just ordered the Carving Caricature Heads book. I'm holding off on the pattern book until I get the first one. Looking forward to learning from one of the "Masters". I'd love to know if he finishes his "natural" carvings with anything to protect them from dirt, age, etc.

the photo you posted a link for shows the width much better, and i believe it to be an inch to an inch and a half..

Might as well admit it, (seams like I'm caught anyway) i like this carving so much i have already cut it out of a 2x7x12 " basswood block, with my scrollsaw. the block is wrecked for anything else so I'm continuing to finish this block..

because i couldn't find the pattern, when it came to the side profile i earnestly tried to figure it out on my own but kept coming up with wide body's for the 2 boys-men? that wouldn't look right,,

as the carving is done on many different planes the true body positions and locations are very hard to map, through the 7 voids...

I will fire off a email to Marve through the cca and see if he will share or sell a instructional drawing for this carving. but it will be later..

Hey Thomp, missed that light blue link you posted earlier on.

I don't know which patterns are in that book, booklet or package, didn't even know it existed ,so I learned something new about it being available.
I would guess some of those cutouts of his that are shown elsewhere on that site are some of the patterns included in the seminar book. I expect something like the bird carving would just be a piece created by him for competition rather than a seminar item, but who knows until "you" ask him EH!.

You may be right, most of the more complicated pieces arnt listed amoung the patterns in the books as far as i found,,
Marv's carvings featured at this cca website have 5 listed (filenames) saw, concrete, birds, wheelbarrow and one named Kaisersatt

maybe the last one may be offered in the book but i doubt the others wouldnt be offered except for advanced students there just too busy for a beginner
other carvings can be found here ...
