Default Another Attempt!!!!!

Here's another attempt at relief carving. Although my carving in the round has a lot of need for improvement it comes a lot easier to me than relief carving. I found this pattern in an old carving book "You Can Whittle and Carve" by Hellum and Gottshall. This was one of the relief patterns in it. The problem is that the picture of the finished plaque was only a 2" x 2-1/2" picture in B&W so that it was really hard to pick up on the detail...not that I'm using that as an excuse. It just made the carving that much more difficult for me.

The wood, believe it or not is 5/4 southern basswood. I picked up this piece at a TN sawmill this past fall and even in it's rough sawn state I new that it was going to be pretty once it was sanded and finished. What you are seeing is it's natural color.

The dogs are 8" x 9" and finished clear with satin WB poly. I'm giving it to my wife for Christmas as a rememberance of the two labs that we have lost.

I don't know Eddy. I just think you could do better, so if you will pack it up and ship it to Ontario I'll give it a good home Just kidding, I think it looks great.

Nice job on the pups Eddy. I also have a lot of good dog memories and come to think of it, some of the best friends I ever had.
